STATEMENT: Fund The Patient Reacts to President Trump’s Great Healthcare Plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Trump this week unveiled a four-pronged health policy plan designed to lower health costs for Americans nationwide, titled the Great Healthcare Plan. Chief among the president’s proposed reforms is empowering patients with direct government funding that would otherwise go to insurance companies.

The Advisory Council for Fund The Patient, a national health policy movement comprised of patient advocates, policy experts, and doctors, offered the following statement in response to the president’s plan:

“Empowering patients to control their own health care dollars is sound policy that will pay dividends to all Americans for decades to come,” said Ge Bai, Johns Hopkins Professor of Health Policy and Advisor to Fund The Patient. “We hope that Congress takes up this mantle and passes these common-sense reforms as soon as possible.”

“As a doctor on the front line, I see how much patients struggle with finding affordable care. Giving them direct funding allows them to shop for the best price and highest quality,” said Anthony DiGiorgio, UCSF Neurosurgeon and Advisor to Fund The Patient. “This will force healthcare providers to compete for patients, providing patient-centric services at the lowest price possible.”

“Health care reforms in the 21st century have consistently brought the focus of care away from the patient and towards insurance companies,” said Terry Wilcox, co-founder of Patients Rising and Advisor to Fund the Patient. “The reforms offered by President Trump put patients front and center, where they belong. We look forward to the future of the Great Healthcare Plan and encourage Congress to take these reforms seriously.”

About Fund the Patient

Fund the Patient is a movement that offers a supplemental alternative to status-quo health care policy – directly giving patients health care funds that would otherwise go to insurers, big hospital systems, and government programs. Through patient education and issue advocacy, Fund the Patient aims to empower patients to choose care options with direct government funding, lower barriers to access care, and provide a quality, flexible patient experience for all Americans.
